I just finished a DoorDash delivery and I’m still shaking my head. Do people really think $40 is some huge, life-changing tip where you need to add a note saying “hope this was enough”?

Before anyone jumps in, yes, I saw the tip. And yes, I know a lot of people would consider that generous. But when you actually break down what goes into a delivery, it’s not always as simple as the number looks.

I drove across town, dealt with traffic, waited at the restaurant while the order was delayed, and then had to figure out how to navigate a confusing apartment complex just to find the right door. By the time everything was done, that tip didn’t feel as significant as it might seem from the outside.

There are a lot of costs involved too, like gas, time, and wear on the vehicle, and all of that adds up with every delivery. It’s not just about the amount of the tip, but everything that goes into completing the order.

What stands out to me is that customers expect fast, perfect service every time, but when a driver even questions whether the tip reflects the effort involved, people tend to take it personally.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t tip. I just think there’s often a disconnect between what customers consider generous and what it actually takes to complete a delivery.
