I was walking past the courts at the park when I noticed a small metal box filled with basketballs and a big sign that read “play for free.” It was just sitting out in the open, like everyone passing by would automatically follow the honor system.
I stopped for a minute because the whole setup feels like something designed by someone who hasn’t really dealt with the general public. Three basketballs in a box next to a court, and we’re all supposed to just borrow one and return it like it’s some kind of shared classroom activity.
It only takes one person deciding to take a ball without bringing it back for the whole thing to fall apart. There’s no one watching, no one checking, just a system built entirely on trust.
I almost picked one up just to see how easy it would be, but I’m more curious how long it’ll last before the box is empty or damaged. In a couple of weeks, people will probably act surprised when the balls are gone, like it was unexpected.
