Buddy the Stray Dog Survives a Horrific Attack—and Starts Healing

A Labrador Retriever Mix Found Injured in Mississippi
Buddy, a Labrador retriever mix, is beginning a new chapter after surviving an act of extreme cruelty. The dog had been living as a stray when he was found wandering the streets of Mississippi on April 22 with an extension cord wrapped around his neck and severe burns to his face. Authorities later said Buddy had been intentionally set on fire, leaving him in terrible pain.

Severe Burns, Yet a Gentle Temperament
Veterinarians confirmed Buddy is suffering from third- and fourth-degree burns on his face. Despite the trauma, those caring for him describe him as remarkably kind. Shelter director Sandy Williams said Buddy remains “a loving, forgiving dog,” adding that he has kept a tender heart and is expected to become an exceptional companion for the right family.

A Confession, But No Criminal Charges Due to Age
After a reward of more than $10,000 was offered for information, authorities reported that a 12-year-old child confessed to harming Buddy. However, under state law, the child cannot be criminally charged for the abuse because of age. This detail triggered strong public reaction, especially as more people learned about Buddy’s gentle behavior and serious injuries.

“Justice for Buddy”: A Petition Gains Massive Support
Outrage quickly spread online. Sheri Webb of Georgia launched a Change.org petition titled “Justice for Buddy.” By Tuesday, nearly 128,000 people had signed, calling for accountability and legal change. The petition argues there must be consequences for harming a helpless animal, and it also urges long-term psychological help for the child involved. It further calls for the parents to provide reparations for Buddy’s intensive medical care. Webb also warned that cruelty to animals can be a red flag for future violence, and that intervention could help protect others.

Medical Treatment and Progress Beyond Expectations
Since the attack, Buddy has been treated by veterinarians at Mississippi State University’s veterinary college. He has already undergone two skin graft surgeries and is expected to receive additional layers in future treatmentsDr. Elizabeth Swanson, one of the veterinarians caring for him, said Buddy’s recovery has been exceeding expectations, with healing progressing surprisingly well.

A Permanent Injury, but a Real Second Chance
Buddy will live with permanent burn wounds, but his story has inspired hope instead of hesitation. The shelter reported that dozens of families have reached out, hoping to adopt him once he is fully healed. Though the recovery process remains long, Buddy’s supporters believe he is on track to find a safe, loving home and a true fresh start.
